Adrian, our resident entrepreneur, is kicking goals at Plus – achieving things that previously seemed out of reach, like a paid job at a mainstream workplace.
From passion project to micro-business
After starting and growing a thriving micro-business cleaning cars at Plus Frenchs Forest, Adrian and his parents expressed their interest in paid work opportunities for Adrian. His behaviour support lead, Yvette, was fully on board with the idea, seeing firsthand the determination and work ethic that Adrian was capable of.
“Adrian initiated the car washing idea himself,” Yvette explains. “We supported him to create a flyer, and he started offering $5 washes to staff. Over six months, he built up a small business.”
After witnessing Adrian build up his micro-business and his skills, his parents and support staff were confident he was ready for mainstream work.

Landing a paid job
Yvette began reaching out to local car washes in search of any job openings, and when the manager at Star Car Wash heard about Adrian’s strong work ethic and dedication, he was excited to offer him a paid role.
“If Adrian was going to be working,” Yvette recalls the manager saying, “he’s going to get paid.”
At Star Car Wash, Adrian now vacuums interiors, wipes down doors and tyres, and works as part of a busy team – exactly the kind of environment he thrives in. “We clean everything,” Adrian says. “We clean the car outside and inside. I work very hard so I can earn some money.”
Looking ahead, Adrian’s next work experience in the community may include opportunities in grocery stores, exploring roles such as shelf stacking – another step in broadening his skills and workplace exposure.
Thriving beyond work
Adrian’s new job isn’t all he’s achieved at Plus. He’s also thriving socially – creating meaningful friendships with his fellow participants.
“I invite Lillian and James to go bowling. I try to be a good friend,” said Adrian.
Personal growth and support at Plus
Yvette says that Plus has opened doors for Adrian, benefitting his personal growth in more ways than one.
“Plus has had a huge impact on Adrian and the staff have really helped him to achieve his goals. Adrian’s formed genuine connections with staff, and with their support he is interacting with peers, practicing his money skills independently, interacting with community members, and completing a range of life skills.
Building lasting connections
“But I’d say one of his biggest wins is the connections Adrian has formed with his peers. He’s formed friendships and connections which have definitely improved his overall well being. We’re all really proud of Adrian, and it’s a pleasure and a thrill to watch him succeed.”
